UNIT 1
artist statement:
My work involves references of imagery and objects informed by personal and familial memories and archives.
I am interested in navigating the interconnectedness between the body, the material, and the surrounding environment. and how to investigate this idea of encapsulating a feeling of ‘otherness’ through the materiality of my drawing processes. This visceral embodied response sometimes comes with a psychological approach in my practice through intuitive exploration between the directiveness of drawing with charcoal and working with the in-between threshold in various printmaking processes.
Layering fragments through various techniques in translating visual images, going through familial archives, and recording mundane encounters unlocks the open-mindedness between the self and material in the making. A constant dialogue between origins and destinations is always present in my work; repetitive motions and forms leave traces of an amalgamation of different narratives as a way of understanding the gaps in the banalities of identity and culture. I believe a constant push-and-pull aspect always opens room for fluidity and an open-ended narrative in my work.
